چکیده

To take full advantage of the increasingly used shared-memory multicore architectures, software algorithms will need to be parallelized over multiple threads. This means that threads will have to share resources (e.g. some level of cache) and communicate and synchronize with each other. There already exist software libraries (e.g. OpenMP) used to explicitly parallelize available sequential C/C++ and Fortran code, which means that parallel code could be easily obtained. To be able to use parallel software running on multicore architectures in embedded systems with hard real-time constraints, new WCET (Worst-Case Execution Time) analysis methods and tools must be developed. This paper investigates a method based on model-checking a system of timed automata using the UPPAAL tool box. It is found that it is possible to perform WCET analysis on (small) parallel systems using UPPAAL. We also show how to model thread synchronization using spinlock-like primitives. 1998 ACM Subject Classification C.0, C.1.2, C.3, D.2.4

Towards Multicore WCET Analysis

AbsInt is the leading provider of commercial tools for static code-level timing analysis. Its aiT Worst-Case Execution Time Analyzer computes tight bounds for the WCET of tasks in embedded real-time systems. However, the results only incorporate the core-local latencies, i.e. interference delays due to other cores in a multicore system are ignored. This paper presents some of the work we have d...

Automatic WCET Analysis of Real-Time Parallel Applications

Tomorrow’s real-time embedded systems will be built upon multicore architectures. This raises two challenges. First, shared resources should be arbitrated in such a way that the WCET of independent threads running concurrently can be computed: in this paper, we assume that timepredictable multicore architectures are available. The second challenge is to develop software that achieves a high lev...

Finding minimum and maximum termination time of timed automata models with cyclic behaviour

The paper presents a novel algorithm for computing worst case execution time (WCET) or maximum termination time of real-time systems using the timed automata (TA) model checking technology. The algorithm can work on any arbitrary diagonal-free TA and can handle more cases than previously existing algorithms for WCET computation, as it can handle cycles in TA and decide whether they lead to an i...

Comparison of Implicit Path Enumeration and Model Checking Based WCET Analysis

In this paper, we present our new worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis tool for Java processors, supporting both implicit path enumeration (IPET) and model checking based execution time estimation. Even though model checking is significantly more expensive than IPET, it simplifies accurate modeling of pipelines and caches. Experimental results using the UPPAAL model checker indicate that m...

WCET-Aware Optimization of Shared Cache Partition and Bus Arbitration for Hard Real-Time Multicore Systems

In recent years, multicore processors have been receiving a significant amount of attention from avionic and automotive industries as the demand for high-end real-time applications drastically increases. However, the unpredictable worst-case timing behavior that mainly arises from shared resource contention in current multicore architectures has been the biggest stumbling block for a widespread...
